Obviously, obviously having an engine engine monitor would be nice. However, with a single EGT and a carbon engine you simply lean it until it gets rough and then advance the mixture until it gets smooth. Your concern over beingtoo lean is unnecessary. If you follow Mike Bush, who is an expert. He basically says lean until you can’t take it anymore. If you can take the engine roughness, the engine can take the lean mixture. Now that might be a slight exaggeration as you don’t want the plain vibrating so much the things start vibrating loose. But the point is as the mixture gets leaner, especially beyond 25° lane of peak on the last cylinder to that temperature you’re burning cleaner, less fuel and cooler. Anything later than that only does more of these three things. I have flown my serious SR 22 Lian of peak for 1900. And although I have a supercharger which basically keeps the plane at sea level manifold pressure until about 8500 feet and so the engine does potentially run hotter and I have to manage that to prevent that from happening. I Boroscope my engine, I cut my filter, I sent my oil for analysis. I have never replaced a cylinder the pictures I’ve taken of my valves look pristine, and metal analysis is ideal. This certainly could change at any time but so far so good. The point being that I run aggressively lean of peak there is no such thing as too leaks of peak engine starts to stumble. I also have a plane with a carbureted Lycoming engine. It is much easier to obtain reproducible, lean of peak numbers with a fuel, injected engine, and an engine monitor. But even with carbureted engine, you can certainly run the leak of peak safely.
